Drill: Slow Break – Trailer Shooting in Transition

Purpose of the Drill

This drill helps girls:

  • Learn to run a controlled offensive transition

  • Recognize the trailing girl as a key scoring option

  • Practice passing, receiving, and finishing on the move

Drill Setup

  • Create four lines of girls:

    • Two on the wings

    • Two at the top (trailer position)

  • Girls on the wings carry the ball down the field.

    • They can simulate a roll back

    • Or make a drop pass to the trailer coming from up top

  • The trailer girl then:

    • Takes a running shot

    • Or moves closer for a composed finish

Technical Emphasis for Girls

  • Use vision to identify open space

  • Make clean passes while on the move

  • Develop shot confidence under pressure

  • Practice verbal and visual communication between girls

Drill Variations for Girls’ Lacrosse

  • Add a recovering defender to simulate game pressure

  • Use a countdown to simulate urgency

  • Reinforce the idea of teamwork in second-wave offense

Coaching Tips

  • Teach girls to use their peripheral vision

  • Emphasize that a slow break is a great chance if the right decision is made

  • Encourage girls to take the shot with confidence when open
