Chain 1v1 Drill: Technique, Competition, and Transition in Lacrosse
This drill is an excellent tool to work on real 1v1 situations in lacrosse, both offensively and defensively. In addition to reinforcing individual technique, it promotes quick decision-making and fast reactions to possession changes, while also providing a strong physical component.
🎯 Drill Objective
Improve individual offensive ability to beat defenders in 1v1 situations.
Promote effective defensive pressure during direct duels.
Stimulate immediate attack-to-defense transitions.
Practice passing on the move after the duel, simulating chained game actions.
Drill Description
Initial Setup:
Two offensive lines are formed: one vertical (Line A) and one horizontal (Line B).
An attacker from Line A starts with the ball facing a defender from Line B in a marked 1v1 zone.
First 1v1 Action:
The attacker attempts to beat the defender using cradle moves, fakes, or changes in speed or direction.
If successful, she passes the ball to her teammate (next attacker in Line A), who immediately enters to face the next defender.
Immediate Transition:
If the defender recovers the ball or forces a turnover, she becomes the attacker and her team switches to offense.
The player who lost possession must immediately switch to defense and remain defending until her team regains possession.
Key Rule:
Players are not allowed to avoid the duel by simply making a lateral pass. The goal is to engage and attempt to win the 1v1, not just move the ball without purpose.
Drill Variations
Use smaller spaces to develop tight control, or larger spaces to work on speed and acceleration.
Add a timer (e.g., 7 seconds) to limit the time allowed for each 1v1.
Turn the final pass into a shot on goal to finish the play.
Introduce scoring for each won duel to create a mini tournament between teams.
Keys to Success
The drill is most effective when done at maximum speed and intensity, just like in a real game.
Attackers should be intentional: find space, protect the ball, and make quick decisions.
Defenders should work on body positioning, stick pressure, and quick footwork to contain their opponents.
Conclusion
This chain-style 1v1 drill is a gem for any lacrosse practice: easy to organize but extremely effective in developing both offensive and defensive fundamentals. Because it’s competitive and rotational, players stay engaged, focused, and motivated throughout.
It’s ideal for high-intensity technical warm-ups, where physical effort and decision-making go hand in hand with individual improvement.
