1v1 slide and recover

This slide-and-recover drill starts as a standard one-on-one, with an extra defender positioned in the crease, prepared to slide. When the attackman gains an advantage and gets a step on their defender, the crease defender slides to take over the responsibility of defending the ball. As this happens, the initial on-ball defender must quickly release and drop back to fill the position left by the crease defender, effectively maintaining defensive balance and structure.

Benefits of Sliding and Recovering on Defense in Lacrosse:

1. Enhanced Defensive Coverage: Sliding allows the defense to support a teammate who is beaten or out of position, preventing easy scoring opportunities for the offense. By having a crease defender ready to slide, the defense can cover gaps and ensure that no attacker is left unguarded.

2. Maintaining Defensive Shape: Recovering, or replacing the sliding defender, helps maintain the defensive structure. This prevents the defense from becoming disorganized, which can lead to open spaces and easy scoring chances for the offense.

3. Forcing Offensive Errors: A well-timed slide can disrupt the attackman’s momentum, forcing hurried passes or low-quality shots. The sudden defensive pressure can lead to turnovers and capitalize on the offense’s mistakes.

4. Improved Communication and Coordination: The slide-and-recover strategy requires defenders to communicate effectively and work as a unit. Practicing this drill helps defenders develop better on-field communication, anticipation, and teamwork, which are crucial for a strong defense.

5. Adaptability to Different Offensive Sets: This drill also trains defenders to react quickly and adapt to various offensive strategies. By practicing sliding and recovering, defenders become more versatile and better equipped to handle different offensive plays and formations.

6. Developing Instincts and Decision-Making: Regular practice of the slide-and-recover drill helps defenders develop quick instincts and decision-making skills. Knowing when to slide and when to recover becomes second nature, making the defense more effective in high-pressure situations.

Overall, the slide-and-recover drill is essential for teaching defenders how to work together, maintain coverage, and protect against offensive threats. It builds a cohesive and resilient defense that can withstand pressure and adapt to different offensive tactics.
