Pick & Roll Drill
How to Teach the Pick and Roll in Lacrosse

1. Start with the Pick:
• Have one player (the picker) set a screen by standing next to the defender guarding their teammate. Emphasize staying stationary to avoid moving pick penalties.
• Teach proper body positioning so the picker blocks the defender without fouling.
2. Introduce the Roll:
• After setting the pick, the picker “rolls” to open space, usually toward the goal. They should be ready for a pass from the ball carrier for a shot.
• Practice timing—rolling too early or too late can disrupt the play.
3. Ball Carrier’s Role:
• The ball carrier uses the pick by dodging tightly around the screen. They either drive to the goal or pass to the rolling player for a shot.
4. Add Defenders:
• Gradually introduce defenders to simulate real-game pressure. Teach the ball carrier to read the defense—whether they switch or stay on their man—and adjust accordingly.
Why It’s Effective:
• Creates Space: The pick helps break down the defense by forcing them to react, leaving space for either the ball carrier or the rolling player.
• Forces Mismatches: Defenders are forced to switch assignments, often creating favorable matchups or leaving someone open.
• Simple Yet Versatile: The pick and roll is easy to learn and can be used in multiple areas of the field, making it a go-to offensive play.
This fundamental play is great for teaching teamwork and timing while creating high-percentage scoring chances.
