Dynamic Partner Passing
When we do partner passing, it shouldn’t just be two players standing still and tossing the ball back and forth. Instead, players should be moving up and down the field, shuffling side to side while maintaining good form to get the ball in and out of their stick as quickly as possible.
This dynamic approach to partner passing is crucial for several reasons:
1. Simulates Game Situations: In a real game, players are rarely stationary. They need to be able to catch and pass while on the move. By practicing passing while shuffling and moving, players simulate the dynamic nature of a game, where they must constantly adjust their position and keep the ball moving.
2. Improves Footwork and Agility: Moving up and down the field while shuffling side to side helps players develop better footwork and agility. These skills are essential for dodging defenders, maintaining balance, and staying quick on their feet during fast-paced plays.
3. Enhances Stick Skills: Practicing quick passes while moving forces players to have better control over their stick and the ball. This helps in developing soft hands for catching and a quick release for passing, both of which are vital for efficient ball movement and maintaining possession under pressure.
4. Builds Muscle Memory: Repetitive practice of passing while in motion builds muscle memory, making these movements second nature during a game. This allows players to focus more on strategy and less on the mechanics of passing and catching, leading to better overall performance.
5. Encourages Communication and Teamwork: Partner passing drills also encourage players to communicate with their teammates. Calling for the ball, signaling a pass, and maintaining awareness of each other’s positions are all critical skills for effective teamwork on the field.
By incorporating movement into partner passing drills, boys learn to pass accurately and efficiently under realistic conditions, better preparing them for the demands of a competitive lacrosse game
