Messy Yard Boys Lacrosse Drill

Objective: The objective is: to have the least amount of balls on your side of the field at the end of the designated time. Players will use their lacrosse sticks to transport the balls.

Materials:

  • 20 or more lacrosse balls (depending on the number of players).

  • Lacrosse sticks for each player.

  • A field divided into two zones (each team has their own "yard").

Game Setup:

  • Teams: Divide the players into two teams. Each team positions itself on one side of the field or playing area.

  • Initial setup: Place all the balls in the center of the field, between both teams.

  • Start of the game: When the whistle blows, players run to the center of the field, pick up the balls using their sticks, and must carry them to the opposite side, the "yard" of the opposing team.

Actions:

  • Transporting balls: Players must lift and carry the balls with their lacrosse sticks.

  • Dropping the ball: Once a player reaches the other side, they must deposit the ball with their stick in the opposing team's area and quickly return to their side to continue the process.

  • Collecting balls: Players can also pick up balls that are on their side and carry them to the opposing side.

End of the game: After a predetermined amount of time (1-3 minutes), the game is stopped with a whistle.

Winner: The team with the fewest balls on their side of the field at the end of the time wins.

Additional Rules:

  • Only one ball at a time: Each player can only transport one ball at a time in their stick.

  • No throwing balls: Balls must be carried using the stick and cannot be thrown or tossed.

  • Foul control: If a player throws a ball, commits a foul, or interferes with another player illegally, their team will be penalized with an extra ball on their side of the field.

Variations for added difficulty:

  • Possession time: To add more challenge, you can limit the time a player can hold a ball in their stick before crossing to the other side.

  • Transportation conditions: Requires players to pass the ball to a teammate before crossing to the other side, encouraging teamwork and precision in passing.

Benefits for Lacrosse:

  • Improves stick handling skills and ball control under pressure.

  • Encourages teamwork and collective strategy.

  • Promotes speed and fast transitions, essential in lacrosse.

  • Develops quick decision-making and off-ball movement.

This adaptation of the game combines the fun of "Messy Yard" with the key skills of lacrosse, providing an entertaining activity that reinforces the sport's fundamental skills.
