Hungry Thieving Hippos
This is a variation of the game “Hungry Hungry Hippos” adapted for lacrosse. Teams of three or more players are formed, each with a base in the corners of the playing area. One or two team members are dedicated to collecting balls from the center, while the others can steal balls from other teams’ bases. An important rule is that the “thieves” cannot steal from the same base twice in a row. The game continues until the balls in the center are gone or until the time designated by the coach ends, and at the end, the balls of each team are counted to determine the winning team.
To play this lacrosse game, follow these steps:
Field Preparation:
Place bases in the corners of the playing area, using boxes or cones to mark them.
Place a large pile of lacrosse balls in the center of the playing area.
Team Formation:
Form teams of three or more players.
Assign a base to each team.
Player Roles:
Two team members will collect balls from the center and bring them to their base.
The third team member will be the “thief,” responsible for stealing balls from other teams’ bases and bringing them to their own base.
Game Rules:
“Thieves” cannot steal balls from the same base twice in a row.
Only one ball can be carried per trip.
The game continues until the balls in the center are gone or until the designated time ends (depending on how the coach wants to play the game).
End of the Game:
Once the game ends, the balls in each base are counted.
The team with the most balls in their base is the winner.
This game is a fun and dynamic way to practice lacrosse skills like scooping and cradling. The game can be adapted according to the coach’s needs by changing the number of groups, players, and roles, as well as applying various variations to make the game more dynamic, such as: everyone is a thief, including one or two base defenders per team, playing only with the balls in the bases, playing the game by time to increase intensity, etc.
