Drill: Slow Break Trailer Shooting Drill

Purpose of the Drill

This drill helps players:

  • Execute a slow break offensive transition

  • Identify the trailing player as a scoring option

  • Connect passes on the move and finish with a high-quality shot

Drill Setup

  • Set up four lines of players:

    • Two outside lines (wings)

    • Two lines up top (midfield center)

  • The drill simulates a 3v2 or 4v3 slow break.

  • Wing players carry the ball down the field.

    • They either roll back or pass behind to the trailer coming from up top.

  • The trailer receives the pass and has two options:

    • Take a crank shot from up top

    • Dodge forward and finish closer to goal

Tactical Focus

  • Read the defense and recognize if the trailer is open

  • Use proper timing and passing angles during the transition

  • Make quick decisions: shoot right away or drive to goal?

Drill Variations

  • Add passive defenders to apply light pressure

  • Limit the number of cradles before passing or shooting

  • Include a goalie to simulate real shooting pressure

Coaching Tips

  • Emphasize verbal and visual communication

  • Reinforce pace control – not all breaks need to be fast

  • Teach boys how to be effective in a second-wave transition
