Dodge, Pass & Backside Cut Game Simulation

In this article, we present a dynamic and realistic drill that combines several offensive actions into one sequence. It’s ideal for working on individual technical skills, decision-making under pressure, and team coordination.

🎯 Drill Objective

This drill is designed to simulate common in-game situations, allowing players to practice:

  • Aggressive dodges toward the goal

  • Effective change of direction

  • Passing on the move

  • Smart backside cuts into open space

Drill Setup

Equipment:

  • 3 cones (or more if setting up multiple stations)

  • 1 ball per player or pair

  • Space near the goal

Cone placement:

  1. First cone: about 8–10 yards from the goal, centered.

  2. Second cone: near the goal line extended (GLE), on one side of the goal.

  3. Third cone (optional): on the backside to mark the cut area.

Step-by-Step Sequence

1. First Dodge – Split or Split + Roll

The player starts at the top of the field. She runs toward the first cone and executes a split dodge, explosively changing direction. This simulates attacking a defender head-on from the top.

Teaches players to attack space with purpose while protecting the ball.

2. Second Dodge – Zigzag at Goal Line Extended

After the first dodge, the player continues toward the second cone (GLE) and performs a zigzag dodge, simulating a second change of direction to beat a defender near the crease.

Improves body control, quick footwork, and stick handling under pressure.

3. Pass to the Backside

Immediately after the zigzag, the player makes a pass to the opposite side of the field (backside), as if feeding a teammate cutting from the weak side.

Trains field vision and passing accuracy while moving β€” key to breaking down tight defenses.

4. Backside Cut

After passing, the player cuts toward the backside, simulating a possible follow-up pass or drawing the defense away from the center.

Reinforces movement without the ball and awareness of off-ball positioning.

Key Coaching Points

  • Make each dodge sharp and realistic, with change of pace and direction.

  • Emphasize a strong, accurate pass to a teammate or target cone.

  • Encourage an intentional backside cut, not just jogging back.

  • Add passive or active defenders to increase realism.

Drill Variations

  • Include a goalie and finish with a shot from the backside.

  • Run it in pairs or small groups to practice catching and finishing.

  • Add an active defender at the second cone to train real decision-making.

Benefits of the Drill

  • High transfer to real game situations

  • Improves the ability to read and react while moving

  • Builds timing and chemistry between passes and cuts β€” critical in mens' lacrosse
