Cross Goal Finishing Drill for Men’s Lacrosse

Introduction:
The Cross Goal finishing drill is excellent for teaching men’s lacrosse players how to catch the ball in the midfield area and quickly execute precise shots. Through continuous movement, players practice coordinating their catch and shot, which enhances their offensive skills and helps them refine their finishing techniques.

Step-by-Step Drill Development:

  1. Equipment Setup:
Set up two lines of players about 6-8 yards above the goal line, facing each other. Make sure that every player in one line, except the first, has a ball.

  2. Drill Start:
The first player in the line without a ball prepares to receive a pass. The first player in the other line, holding a ball, passes it to him.

  3. Immediate Catch and Shot:
The player receiving the pass catches it mid-air and immediately takes a shot on goal. This quick response teaches players to finish plays with agility and accuracy, both essential for offensive scenarios.

  4. Chain Passing and Movement:
After shooting, the player who passed the ball receives a pass from the next player in his line, who becomes the next shooter. The drill continues in rapid succession, allowing players multiple reps for shooting and catching.

  5. Continuous Repetition:
This pass-and-shoot pattern continues in a constant flow, with each player rotating through passing and shooting positions, providing multiple opportunities to improve both shot accuracy and catching on the move.

Drill Benefits:

  • Enhances Catch-and-Shoot Coordination:
This drill helps players effectively combine catching and shooting movements, crucial for quick offense.

  • Improves Shot Accuracy and Speed:
Practicing fast shots strengthens both accuracy and shooting speed, essential for effective attack.

  • Builds Endurance and Mental Agility:
The Cross Creek drill also helps players develop quick decision-making, training both body and mind to respond effectively under pressure.
