5v4 Midfield Ground balls

This drill begins with a coach initiating play by rolling out a groundball at a random location on the field. The objective differs based on which team recovers the groundball:

  • Offense (X): If the offensive team retrieves the ball, they must quickly organize to attack the goal in a 5v4 setup. Offensive skip passes are permitted only if they directly lead to a shot.

  • Defense (D): If the defensive team secures the ball, their goal is to execute a clear. Any turnovers or saves must also be cleared by the defense.

Skills Practiced:

  • Ball Movement: Enhances the team's ability to pass and maintain possession under pressure, crucial in men’s lacrosse for controlling the game.

  • Creating Space Offensively Off-Ball: Focuses on the off-ball movement required to open passing lanes and create shooting opportunities, vital for dynamic offensive plays in boys' lacrosse.

  • Shifting and Sliding: Improves the defense's ability to adjust to the ball's movement and maintain protective positioning, essential for robust defense in men's lacrosse.

  • Communication: Encourages players to verbally coordinate their movements and strategies on both ends of the field, a key component for effective teamwork in boys' lacrosse.

Variations:

  • Rotational Play: Allow players to rotate positions, promoting versatility. The last midfielder to touch the ball rotates out, with the remaining two transitioning to defense, fostering adaptability in men's lacrosse players.

  • Dual Field Setup: Conduct the drill simultaneously at both ends of the field to maximize participation and reduce downtime, ensuring all players in boys’ lacrosse get ample practice time.

  • Time Challenge: If the offense has not scored within a set time, introduce an additional defender to increase the challenge for the offensive team, adding pressure similar to game situations in men's lacrosse.

This drill not only sharpens essential skills but also fosters quick thinking and adaptability across both offensive and defensive plays in men’s and boys' lacrosse.
