Three-man weave
A three-man weave is an excellent drill for lacrosse practice to improve passing, catching, communication, and movement. Here’s how to conduct a three-man weave drill specifically for lacrosse:
Three-Man Weave Drill Steps:
1. Setup:
• Line up three players at one end of the field or a designated starting point.
• Ensure each player has a stick and one player starts with the ball.
2. Starting the Drill:
• The player in the middle (Player 2) starts with the ball and begins running forward.
• Player 2 passes the ball to one of the outside players (Player 1 or Player 3) and then runs behind the receiving player to fill the opposite lane.
3. Weaving and Passing:
• After receiving the pass, the outside player (Player 1) continues running forward and then passes the ball to the opposite outside player (Player 3) while the middle player (Player 2) runs behind them.
• Player 1, after passing, runs behind Player 2 to fill the middle lane.
• Player 3 then repeats the process by passing to Player 2, and the cycle continues.
4. Maintaining Rhythm and Timing:
• The key is to maintain a continuous flow with quick, accurate passes and synchronized movement.
• Players must communicate effectively, calling for the ball and signaling their intentions.
5. Completing the Drill:
• Continue the weave pattern until the players reach the other end of the field or a designated stopping point.
• The drill can end with a shot on goal or a designated finishing action like a quick dodge or pass.
Key Points to Emphasize:
• Communication: Players should constantly communicate to ensure smooth passing and movement.
• Accuracy: Focus on making precise passes and clean catches while on the move.
• Speed: Encourage players to perform the drill at game speed to simulate real-game conditions.
• Transition: Players should transition quickly between passing and moving to their new positions.
Benefits:
• Improves Passing and Catching: Enhances players’ ability to pass and catch while moving.
• Promotes Teamwork: Encourages players to work together and communicate effectively.
• Develops Field Awareness: Helps players understand positioning and movement on the field.
• Simulates Game Scenarios: Provides a realistic practice environment that mimics game situations.
Variations:
• Add a Defender: Introduce a defender to increase difficulty and simulate pressure.
• Change Speed: Vary the speed of the drill to focus on different aspects such as precision at a slower pace or speed and quick decision-making at a faster pace.
• Incorporate Shots: Conclude the weave with a shot on goal to integrate shooting practice.
• Add a pick, as in the video: When a player passes to the wing they can follow the pass with a pick.
