Inside out Defensive one on ones

Objective: To teach one-on-one offensive and defensive tactics, with a focus on defense inside the critical scoring area.

Setup:

• Create three lines of players:

Two wing lines: Positioned at the elbows of the 8-meter arc (one on each side).

One line up top: Positioned at the top (point) of the 8-meter arc.

• A coach stands in the middle with balls to feed.

Instructions:

1. The coach feeds the ball to one of the wing players or the top line.

2. The defensive player, starting inside the critical scoring area, must roll inside and react to the feed.

3. The offensive player who receives the pass attacks, aiming to get to the goal.

4. The defensive player must extend out to meet the attacker and play solid one-on-one defense.

5. The coach alternates feeding between the three lines to create a variety of situations.

Key Focus:

• Defense: Focus on positioning and maintaining control inside the critical scoring area.

• Offense: Work on quick reactions, dodging, and attacking the defender one-on-one.

This drill is important because it develops crucial one-on-one skills for both offensive and defensive players, which are key in lacrosse. For defenders, it emphasizes the ability to protect the critical scoring area, react quickly to the ball, and extend out to challenge attackers effectively. Offensively, it teaches players to read defenders, dodge, and create space to drive toward the goal. Mastering these one-on-one situations builds confidence and sharpens decision-making during high-pressure game moments.
