Pass, pick and slip
This article shows a series of exercises to imitate the offense in lacrosse, specifically in the 1-3-2 and 1-4-1 formations. The exercises focus on the two-man game and how to establish and use screens (picks) effectively
Setup: Form a group of four players in a box formation. Divide the players into two pairs: one pair will be “1 and 3” and the other “2 and 4”.
Drill: Player 3 passes the ball to player 1 and prepares for a “Dodge” (feint). Simultaneously, player 2 passes the ball to player 4, and they perform the same action on the other side of the field.
Game Options:
Set a screen (pick): The player who passes the ball moves to block the defender of the receiver.
Slip: The player who sets the screen slides to an open position to receive a pass.
Bail: The player who sets the screen retreats to create space.
Execution: The player who receives the pass must move (drift) to a good position to perform the feint and shoot.
variant
The receiver drags the defender and passes to the player who slips.
Make sure the player setting the screen takes an inside-out angle to surprise the defenders, receive the ball, and shoot at the goal
Benefits:
Improvement of Coordination: Helps players improve hand-eye coordination and synchronization with their teammates.
Development of Tactical Skills: Teaches players to read the defense and make quick decisions, such as when to set a screen, slip, or bail.
Strengthening Communication: Promotes effective communication among players, essential for coordinating movements and strategies during the game.
Increase in Agility and Speed: The quick movements and changes of direction required in this drill improve players’ agility and speed.
Improvement of Shooting Accuracy: Practicing shots over the screen and precise passes to the slipping player helps improve shooting accuracy and effectiveness in attack.
