3v2 Scramble Drill

Purpose:

• To improve offensive spacing, quick decision-making, passing, and shooting.

• To develop defensive slide and recovery fundamentals, field awareness, and conditioning.

• Fast-paced drill that mimics game-like scramble situations.

Drill Setup:

Cages: Set up two cages on the restraining lines, facing the end lines (away from the center of the field).

Offensive Lines: Three offensive players start near the end lines, behind the cage.

Defensive Lines: Two defenders start midway between the cages, on the sideline, ready to enter the field.

Drill Execution:

1. Start of Play:

• Three offensive players streak down the field (60-70 yards) from behind the cage toward the goal.

• Two defenders enter from the sideline, either from the same or opposite sideline.

2. Offensive Play:

• Offensive players begin behind the cage, circle around to the front to set up a scoring opportunity.

• Defenders must adjust and get set on the opposite side of the cage to defend the attack.

3. Shot and Reset:

• After a shot, the goalie immediately passes the ball to one of the next offensive players in line.

• The new offensive group streaks down the field, while two new defenders enter from the sideline.

4. Repeat:

• The drill continues back and forth, with a constant rotation of offensive and defensive players.

• The 3v2 scramble setup starts behind the cage, simulating game-like chaos.

Coaching Points:

Offense:

• Focus on quick, accurate passing and shooting.

• Maintain proper spacing and move the ball efficiently.

Defense:

• Communicate and react quickly to the offensive attack.

• Slide and recover to maintain defensive positioning.

Both Offense and Defense:

• Players should move fast and maintain a high pace to simulate in-game situations.

• Field awareness is key—both offensively and defensively.

Options:

3v3 Variation: Add a third defender to make it 3v3, forcing more defensive communication and recognition.

Short Stick Variation: Run the drill with only short sticks for both offense and defense to increase speed and intensity.

Benefits:

• High-paced drill that improves decision-making under pressure.

• Replicates game-like scramble situations from behind the cage.

• Incorporates both offensive and defensive skills, as well as conditioning.

This drill is great for keeping players engaged while focusing on fundamentals, conditioning, and field awareness. Your players will love the fast pace and competitiveness!
