1 v 1 Scramble or Recover Drill
Drill Overview: This drill is designed to enhance players' decision-making and agility in scramble or recovery situations, typically when gaining possession close to an opponent or after a defender has to chase and check from behind.
Setup:
Divide players into three groups spread across the half field.
Each group forms two lines: one for offense and one for defense, with both lines equipped with lacrosse balls.
The offensive player starts with the ball.
Execution:
At the sound of the whistle, players from the first group engage in a 1 v 1 duel, starting side by side.
The offensive player’s goal is to press toward the cage, using changes in direction or bursts of speed to get past the defender.
The defender aims to quickly recover to the center ("the hole") and attempt a takeaway before the offensive player can shoot.
Progression:
After each duel, rotate to the next group and repeat the process.
Skills Practiced:
1 v 1 offensive and defensive maneuvers
Defensive positioning and recovery
Conditioning through continuous movement
Variation:
Change the starting locations of the 1 v 1 duels to introduce different angles and challenges.
Introduce a central defender who slides to assist once the 1 v 1 reaches a specific point on the field, adding complexity and realism to the drill.
This drill focuses on developing quick decision-making and defensive strategies under pressure, critical for game-like situations where space and time are limited.
The key difference between the 1 v 1 Scramble or Recover Drill and simply taking turns going 1 v 1 lies in the specific scenario and context set up for each encounter. Here’s a breakdown of how the Scramble or Recover Drill adds more complexity and realism compared to standard 1 v 1 practice:
Contextual Setup: In the Scramble or Recover Drill, each 1 v 1 is initiated under specific conditions that mimic real game situations—such as a defender needing to recover after an overcommitment or chase down from behind. This adds an element of unpredictability and urgency not typically present in straightforward 1 v 1 drills.
Defensive Focus: Unlike regular 1 v 1 drills where the emphasis might be equally on both players, this drill places particular emphasis on the defensive player's ability to quickly recover to a defensive position and effectively challenge the attacker. The scenario starts with a disadvantage for the defender, testing their ability to handle pressure and regain positioning.
Rotational and Continuous Play: The drill involves multiple groups working simultaneously across different parts of the field, which keeps the drill dynamic and high-paced. This setup contrasts with taking turns in a single line for 1 v 1, as it involves more players actively engaging in the drill with minimal downtime.
Progressive Complexity: Adding elements like a sliding defender from the middle as the play develops introduces another layer of complexity. This component forces both the attacker and the defender to adapt their strategies in real-time, closely simulating actual game conditions where multiple players interact and roles shift rapidly.
Overall, the Scramble or Recover Drill is designed to enhance reactive skills and situational awareness beyond the scope of typical 1 v 1 exercises, making it more aligned with the dynamics of an actual lacrosse game.
