Pick and Roll

Executing the Pick and Roll in Lacrosse and Why It’s a Great Strategy

The pick and roll, a staple of basketball, translates seamlessly to lacrosse as an effective offensive tactic. This maneuver involves two players: one sets a pick (screen) on a defender, while the other rolls to an open space after the pick is set. Here’s how it works and why it’s a powerful strategy:

How to Execute the Pick and Roll in Lacrosse:

1. Setting the Pick:

• One offensive player positions themselves near the defender guarding their teammate. The goal is to block the defender’s path, providing an opportunity for the teammate to dodge or move around the pick. The player setting the pick must keep their feet stationary and avoid illegal movement.

2. The Roll:

• After setting the pick, the same player “rolls” towards the open space, ideally moving towards the goal. The defender who was screened is now out of position, and if a switch happens, it often results in a mismatch.

3. Creating Space:

• As the pick disrupts the defense, the offensive player with the ball can either take advantage of the lane created for a shot or pass to the rolling teammate, who may now have an open look at the net.

Why It’s a Great Strategy:

Disrupts Defensive Alignment: The pick forces the defense to make decisions—whether to switch defenders or stick to their assignments. This confusion can create mismatches or leave one player open.

Creates Scoring Opportunities: By generating space and freeing up players, the pick and roll can lead to high-percentage scoring chances. Whether it’s the ball carrier driving toward the goal or the roller receiving a pass, the defense is left scrambling.

Simplicity and Versatility: The pick and roll is simple to execute but difficult to defend when done correctly. It can be used in various situations, from midfield dodges to behind-the-goal setups, making it a versatile offensive weapon.

Forces Quick Defensive Decisions: When defenders are caught off-guard, they are forced to communicate quickly and adjust their positioning. This can lead to mistakes or delayed reactions, which offensive players can exploit.

The pick and roll is an essential tool in lacrosse that opens up offensive options, creates mismatches, and challenges defenses to adapt on the fly.
