2 on 1 Ground Balls

Objective: The main goal of this drill is to enhance communication during groundball recovery and to effectively utilize an additional player to gain an advantage in women's lacrosse.

Space/Equipment Needed:

  • Lacrosse balls

  • Lacrosse goal

Players:

  • All players are encouraged to participate, with group sizes ideally maintained at 10-12 players for optimal interaction and feedback.

Drill Execution:

  • Arrange three lines of players along a sideline: two offensive players on the outer lines and one defensive player in the middle line.

  • A coach rolls a ball out in front of the lines to initiate competition for the ball.

  • If an offensive player gains possession of the ball, she must pass it to her line-mate before completing a pass to a coach.

  • If the defensive player secures the groundball, her first move should be to pass it directly to a coach.

Skills Practiced:

  • Communication between players, particularly in man/ball situations.

  • Efficient groundball scooping under pressure and quick distribution after gaining possession.

  • Ambidextrous skills development by using both hands during the drill.

Variations/Progressions:

  • Skill Challenge: Encourage the use of both hands to enhance dexterity and control, increasing the drill's difficulty.

  • Competitive Element: Introduce a physical challenge, such as push-ups, for the offensive players if the defender wins the groundball, adding a competitive edge.

  • Advanced Tactical Play: Include additional offensive and defensive players near the goal. If the offense retrieves the initial groundball, they move into a 3-on-2 attack towards the goal. If the defense wins, they must execute a clear to the midfield line, simulating real-game defensive transitions.

Goalie Involvement:

  • Goalkeepers actively participate in scenarios where the 3-on-2 attack is played out, enhancing their in-game responsiveness and coordination with the defensive unit.

This drill not only targets fundamental skills such as groundball recovery but also incorporates essential team dynamics and communication, making it a crucial exercise for developing comprehensive field awareness and teamwork in women’s lacrosse.
