Nations Offensive Strategy

The "Nation's Look" in lacrosse is a strategic play that involves coordinated movement and passing among three players, typically on the same side of the field, to create scoring opportunities. Here's how it is typically executed and what its main focus is:

Structure of the Nation's Look:

  1. Three Player Coordination:

    • The drill involves three players: the Dodger, the Picker, and the Feeder.

    • These roles are dynamic and can switch as the play unfolds, based on the ball movement and player positioning.

  2. Initial Setup:

    • The Dodger begins with the ball, initiating movement towards the goal.

    • The Picker sets a screen (pick) for the Dodger, aiming to create space for the Dodger to either shoot or pass.

    • The Feeder positions themselves in a strategic location where they can receive a pass from the Dodger or engage in further play-making.

  3. Execution:

    • As the Dodger makes their move, the Picker's role is to obstruct the defender, allowing the Dodger a clearer path to the goal or an unobstructed passing lane.

    • Depending on how the defense reacts, the Dodger can pass to the Feeder, who can take a shot, or continue to carry and look for another opening.

    • After setting the pick, the Picker can "roll" to the goal (move towards the goal after the pick) to receive a pass for a shot, or "pop" out (move away from the goal) to an open space for a safer pass option.

Objectives and Benefits:

  • Create Mismatches: By engaging multiple defenders with the Dodger and Picker, the play aims to create mismatches or force the defense to make quick decisions, which can lead to errors or openings.

  • Versatility: The Nation's Look is designed to be adaptable. Players must read the defense and make quick decisions based on their positioning and the defenders' reactions.

  • Focus on Movement and Space: The drill emphasizes continuous movement, communication, and spacing. Players learn to utilize space effectively and develop a sense of timing for when to cut, screen, or pass.

Drill Variations:

  • Consecutive Nation’s Drill: Involves repeated execution of the Nation's Look, cycling through roles and continuously passing and moving to refine timing and coordination under dynamic conditions.

This strategy is particularly effective in developing players' ability to think ahead, anticipate the movement of teammates and defenders, and execute plays under pressure. It teaches adaptability and quick decision-making, essential skills for competitive lacrosse.
