Women's Lacrosse ISO for the Center Midfielder

When running an isolation (ISO) play for the center midfielder to attack the goal, there are several options depending on player strengths and preferences.

  1. Clearing Space:

    • The two adjacent midfielders will clear out by dropping down and out, creating an open lane for the center midfielder.

    • The two attackers in front of the goal will pop outward as potential passing options.

  2. Setting Up the ISO:

    • If the center midfielder is right-handed, clear space to the right side.

    • If they are left-handed, clear space to the left side.

    • If they are a versatile dodger, have them start low and use their creativity to attack.

  3. Back-Up on the Shot:

    • It's crucial to have someone positioned behind the goal to back up any missed shots.

    • Without back-up, a missed shot results in a turnover and a fast break the other way.

  4. Transition Considerations:

    • Midfielders who clear out must be aware of potential defensive recovery needs in case of a turnover.

    • If the ball enters the 8-meter area, the midfielders can step back up to contest a rebound or slow down transition.

    • Defenders will follow their marks, meaning the first outlet pass from the goalie may take a moment, giving the offense a chance to ride.

This ISO setup allows the center midfielder to attack effectively while maintaining structure and defensive awareness.
