The ABCDs of 1-on-1 Defense in Women’s Lacrosse

1. A: Approach

• Never wait for the attacker; initiate the movement.

• Approach the attacker at an angle, not directly, to funnel them where you want them to go (preferably to their weak side).

• Get about a stick’s length away from the attacker. Too close can cause a foul, too far gives them space to attack.

2. B: Breakdown

• As you get close to the attacker, break down your steps (chop your feet) to maintain control and stay in a strong defensive position.

• Keep hips low, back straight, and stay in an athletic stance to react to their movements.

3. C: Contact

• Depending on the level of play, make physical contact by placing your body or stick on the attacker’s hip without pushing or jabbing.

• Keep your arms bent and maintain a strong position without committing fouls like straight-arming the attacker.

4. D: Direct (Drive)

• Use your legs to drive the attacker toward the sideline or away from the goal.

• The power comes from your legs, not your arms. Keep the attacker moving in the direction you’ve chosen to minimize their scoring opportunities.

By following the ABCDs of defense, players can effectively control their opponents and limit offensive opportunities.
