Jump Shot Drill in Lacrosse

Objective:
The main goal of this drill is to work on jumping off one foot and exploding upwards while executing the jump shot. Additionally, it emphasizes the rotation of the hips and torso during the movement, which is crucial for generating power and accuracy in the shot.

Execution:

  1. Starting Position: The player starts in a static position, ready to take a step and jump.

  2. Jump and Explosion: Jump off one foot (the one closest to the goal), while rotating the hips to ensure the movement is smooth and controlled. As you jump, it’s important to explode upwards with force, generating momentum with your legs.

  3. Torso Rotation: At the highest point of the jump, rotate your torso completely to execute the shot. The torso rotation is key to adding power to the shot.

  4. Controlled Landing: After the jump, when landing, it is important to land under control using the same leg that was used to jump.

Variations:

  • With a partner: If you're working with a partner, they can pass you the ball, making it easier to focus on the movement.

  • Solo: If you're practicing alone, you can place several balls in a line and go through the drill by yourself, collecting the balls for each repetition.

Benefits:

  • Improves jumping technique, explosiveness, and accuracy when performing the jump shot.

  • Adaptable for solo or partner practice, making it effective in various situations.

  • A simple but valuable drill to improve shot mechanics and coordination in lacrosse, especially when working with your non-dominant hand.

Materials Needed:

  1. Lacrosse Balls: At least 3 or 4 balls for repetitions. If practicing alone, the balls allow you to do the drill without stopping to pick them up constantly.

  2. Lacrosse Stick: You’ll need your stick to execute the shot.

  3. Wide Open Space: Find a safe area with enough room to move freely. This can be a lacrosse field, a sports court, or any large outdoor area.

  4. Cones (Optional): If you want to mark a specific area to perform the jumps or improve shot accuracy, you can use cones or any other objects to define the work area.

  5. Partner (Optional): While you can do the drill alone, a partner can make it easier by passing you the balls and making the drill more dynamic.

This drill is excellent for improving jump mechanics, shot accuracy, and control in lacrosse, helping you develop both your technique and explosiveness.
