Face Off and Fast Breaks Team Drill

Objective:

This drill focuses on improving faceoffs, fast breaks, and substitutions on the fly, keeping players moving and engaged throughout. It is essentially a fast-paced game with 1 defenseman and 2 attackmen on a shortened field.

Setup:

Field Configuration:

• Shorten the field so the goal is placed halfway between the crease and the restraining box.

• Ensure that two offensive players stay onside and one defensive player stays onside at all times.

• This setup promotes fast-break situations, rewarding the team that wins the faceoff and creating mismatches that lead to scoring opportunities.

Player Roles:

• Allow all players to rotate through different positions.

• Do not limit players to their typical positions (e.g., long stick, attack) to encourage the development of versatile skills.

• This helps players become more well-rounded, such as long poles learning to clear and run breaks and attackmen practicing defensive skills.

Execution:

Game Flow:

• Keep the ball moving upfield as quickly as possible to simulate realistic game speed and pressure.

• Do not stop the drill; continuous play is key. Set up substitutions by the midfield line as in a real game scenario, encouraging players to learn proper subbing techniques during live play.

• Players on the side of the field away from the action should be ready to sub in at any moment.

Hydration:

• Have water available on the sidelines so players can hydrate when they sub out, minimizing downtime and keeping the practice session efficient.

Summary:

This drill enhances players’ skills in dynamic, game-like situations, emphasizing quick decision-making, fast transitions, and versatility on the field. By incorporating continuous play and varied positions, players gain valuable experience that prepares them for real-game scenarios.
