3v3 Breakout Drill: Defensive Communication and Offensive Activation
This dynamic 3v3 lacrosse drill emphasizes both defensive and offensive skills by starting with defensemen behind the goal and offensive players at the top of the box. It encourages defensive stick skills, communication, and proper positioning, while giving offensive players opportunities to react quickly and capitalize on mismatches. Perfect for enhancing both sides of the game in a fast-paced, realistic scenario.
Setup:
• 3 defensemen start behind the goal.
• 3 offensive players position themselves at the top of the box.
• Why It’s Effective:
• Incorporates defensemen’s stick skills, which are often overlooked in typical 3v3 drills.
• Emphasizes defensive communication—defensemen must coordinate who will cover each offensive player.
• Teaches defensive fundamentals like proper approach, positioning, and footwork.
• Drill Flow:
1. The ball starts with one of the defensemen behind the goal.
2. After making a pass, the defenseman releases to pick up an offensive player.
3. The final defenseman in possession passes the ball to an offensive player of his choice.
4. Once the offensive player receives the ball, all offensive players activate, and the 3v3 begins.
• Goal of the Drill:
• Develop both offensive and defensive skills through live, game-like scenarios.
• Improve unsettled defense communication between defenders while maintaining defensive structure.
• Allow offense to work on quick ball movement and capitalize on mismatches.
