Understanding the Flex Offense for New Basketball Coaches
Understanding the Flex Offense: A Quick Guide for New Basketball Coaches
The Flex Offense is a classic continuity offense that repeats a simple pattern to create scoring chances. Here’s what you need to know:
Basic Setup:
2 players up top (guards)
2 players in the corners
1 post player inside
How It Starts:
Ball is passed from one guard to the other.
That pass triggers a flex screen — the post player screens for the corner player.
First Option:
The corner player cuts hard to the basket.
If open, pass it for an easy layup.
If the Cutter Isn't Open:
The player who set the flex screen now receives a down screen from the opposite side.
They pop out to the top for a jump shot or to continue the offense.
Key Points:
After one side runs the action, swing the ball and repeat it on the other side.
Good screens and sharp, quick cuts are critical.
Patience is important — it might take a few cycles to find a great shot.
Variations:
Some teams add back screens or corner options to catch the defense off guard.
Why Run Flex:
Teaches spacing, timing, and teamwork.
Forces the defense to communicate and fight through screens.
Still used in parts by NBA teams within set plays.
Tip for New Coaches:
Focus on screen angles, hard cuts, and timing — that's what makes the Flex offense tough to guard!
