1-3-1 Set: Shot for Shooting Guard
This 1-3-1 action is designed to free up your shooting guard for a clean look against man defense. The timing is quick, the shot should come within 5–10 seconds if executed right.
The action:
‘2’ sets a backscreen to ‘4’ which cuts to the basket, which opens the floor.
If 4 is open its an easy find for the point guard. If not, ‘5’ sets a pick to ‘2’ .
That movement gives ‘2’ (the shooting guard) more freedom to find space.
From there, it’s all about reading the defense. If the defender chases, fade. If they go under, rise up. If they trail late, attack the rim.
Keys to success:
The clear-out by ‘4’ is crucial, it creates the space for the shot.
‘2’ has to stay patient, not rush, and take what the defense gives.
Teammates must keep spacing disciplined so the lane and perimeter stay open.
Elapsed time: 5–10 seconds. This is a quick-hit set, don’t drag it out.
Helpful drills to prep this set:
Reading defense drills (defender goes under/over screens).
Passing drills (quick swing passes, skip passes).
Shooting drills (catch-and-shoot, fade, curl).
Finishing drills (attacking the rim if the defense overplays).
Run this consistently, and your shooting guard will start to recognize the reads naturally, turning a simple set into a reliable scoring option.
