1-3-1 Set: Shot for Shooting Guard

This 1-3-1 action is designed to free up your shooting guard for a clean look against man defense. The timing is quick, the shot should come within 5–10 seconds if executed right.

The action:

  • ‘2’ sets a backscreen to ‘4’ which cuts to the basket, which opens the floor.

  • If 4 is open its an easy find for the point guard. If not, ‘5’ sets a pick to ‘2’ .

  • That movement gives ‘2’ (the shooting guard) more freedom to find space.

  • From there, it’s all about reading the defense. If the defender chases, fade. If they go under, rise up. If they trail late, attack the rim.

Keys to success:

  • The clear-out by ‘4’ is crucial, it creates the space for the shot.

  • ‘2’ has to stay patient, not rush, and take what the defense gives.

  • Teammates must keep spacing disciplined so the lane and perimeter stay open.

Elapsed time: 5–10 seconds. This is a quick-hit set, don’t drag it out.

Helpful drills to prep this set:

  • Reading defense drills (defender goes under/over screens).

  • Passing drills (quick swing passes, skip passes).

  • Shooting drills (catch-and-shoot, fade, curl).

  • Finishing drills (attacking the rim if the defense overplays).

Run this consistently, and your shooting guard will start to recognize the reads naturally, turning a simple set into a reliable scoring option.
